A divine day for positive Oldham
Date published: 09 December 2010
A church which has suffered a series of break-ins and thefts is fighting back by rewarding young people who make a positive contribution to society.
The Elim Foursquare Church in Greenacres Road, Oldham, will hand out special commendations on Sunday.
It runs two youth and homework clubs every week. Events throughout the year also range from clean-up days, gardening, fun day, barbecues, talent shows and award days.
But the church has suffered an horrendous run of misfortune and has been broken into several times.
In one raid in the summer, windows were smashed, doors kicked in and laptops, X-Box consoles, games, cash and other items were stolen, costing a total of £9,000.
Pastor Wilfred Achumba said: “We have still not recovered from that.
“But I do know there are still a lot of good young people and Godly parents in our community.
“For these I want to encourage to continue with the good work. We have them in the youth clubs.
“They are the ones who get involved in community clean-ups, gardening and volunteering to help out in the junior club and in the events we organise over the years.
“All of those children and some parents will be receiving awards and commendations on Sunday.
“For the sake of these lovely children and parents we continue with the good work and keep the community spirit going.”
The Christmas Carol service at 10.30am, will be followed by the awards and end of year party at 6pm, in the youth hall, with free meals and drinks.
Pastor Achumba also thanked ward councillor Kay Knox for her support and the East Oldham District Partnership for sponsoring the event.
