Look after the old in the cold

Date published: 03 December 2010

Age Concern Oldham is urging local people to look after older neighbours and check on them during the cold snap.

And volunteers with 4x4 off-road vehicles could also help out.

As the majority of us struggle in the coldest early winter spell for years, the charity wants readers to spare a thought for Oldham’s older population finding it more difficult than usual to get out and cope with day to day living.

And if they come across anyone in need or are worried about friends or relatives who may be finding it hard to get out, the charity is offering help, contact 0161-633 0213.

Help could include the shopping delivery service which can assist on a short or long term basis, for people who are housebound. Staff have been known to leave the delivery van behind to tramp up impassable and treacherous roads, wading though feet of snow to make sure people receive essential food and supplies.

The charity is also looking for people in the Oldham area with a 4x4 vehicle willing to volunteer to help deliver shopping to vulnerable and older people, even if they can only give an hour or two when weather conditions are particularly severe.

Deliveries take place Tuesday to Friday from Lees Co-op store across the Oldham borough.

Anyone interested in finding out some more about the service can call 0161-633 0213 and ask for Julie Curley or Sue Fletcher.
