Sing out for a fabulous Christmas launch

Date published: 30 November 2010

A FESTIVE celebration for all the family saw locals brave the cold conditions to see the Christmas lights switch-on in Chadderton.

Families gathered at Firwood Park as Father Christmas paid a visit to the night of fun, while adults indulged in a winter warmer in the form of delicious mulled wine.

It is the third year that the local residents’ association has organised the festive spectacular to unite the estate in celebration.

Chadderton Brass Band blasted out familiar carols and note-perfect performances from the Mills Hill School choir proved a highlight.

SEASONAL treats and skating fun can be had in Oldham town centre with the return of a Festive Village and ice rink.
Back for a second year, the Festive Village features a seasonal food and drink-led market and an undercover artificial ice rink in Market Place, High Street, from Saturday to December 19.

A total of 15 independent retailers will be selling festive fare, local produce and handmade gifts in a unique, fairytale-inspired setting.

There will also be a daily programme of great entertainment including musicians, entertainers, Christmas characters and face-painters.

The festive market will open daily from 10am to 5.30pm, and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays.

The ice rink will open weekdays from 11.30am to 5.30pm, and at the weekend from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

FAILSWORTH and Hollinwood residents can get into the seasonal spirit at two Christmas lights switch-ons this week. The Hollinwood event starts at 7pm tomorrow at the old Roxy Cinema site. Oldham Community Radio will host the event with singing, music, refreshments available.
The lights will be switched on by Oldham Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton. On Thursday, the switch-on will be held at Failsworth Pole, Oldham Road, from 6.30pm. Failsworth Community Band will play carols.
