Doggies paddle to raise pounds for new centre
Two doggy-paddlers from Oldham have helped to raise funds for their less fortunate friends by a 30 minute swim.
Tilly and Tallulah, two flat coated retrievers, took part in a sponsored hydro-thon in the animal fitness pool at Mypetstop in Denton.
It raised over £600 with more money still coming in for the Pennine Pen Animal Rescue centre in Honeywell Lane, Oldham.
Pennine Pen is fundraising hard to find £120,000 to buy their premises, a former clinic, from the NHS. It has already raised £20,000 which was boosted by £2,000 from the centre’s annual Christmas Fair, and by Croft End Equestrian Centre at Bardsley which also raised £1,155.
And, in the latest fundraiser, 45 dogs of all shapes and types took to the water at the Denton pet boarding and care centre to raise more.
Owners paid £10 per dog for 15 minutes in the water, and Springhead pet-loverJane Allen took along Tilly (5) and Tallulah (3) for a session.
Jane said: “They loved it, and were the first in the water. When I take them for walks I meet so many people who ask what we would do without Pennine Pen.
“I have friends who have had rescue dogs from them and they have nothing but praise for them.”
The events co-ordinator at Mypetstop, Bernadette Armstrong, said: “We thought it would be a great challenge to get as many dogs in as possible, and a perfect opportunity to fundraise for our charity partner.”
Pennine Pen Animal Rescue takes in and helps re-home unwanted and abandoned animals, and has charity shops in Trough Gate, Hollinwood, and Ashton Road, Oldham.
Founder manager Michael Waugh said: “Our lease comes to an end in April and by mutual agreement we are hoping to buy because so much work needs doing at the centre.
“We rehome all sorts of animals — dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, we even have a rat at the moment, and an aviary.
“We are quietly confident we will raise the money.”
