PROUD local students have been rewarded for their hard work during a ceremony at the University Campus Oldham as part of the centre’s five-year celebrations.

It was an emotional day for some as the Rehana Iqbal memorial prize was handed out to two students in memory of the UCO student, killed in a car crash in 2006.

Business students Keelie Rigby and Alan Gartside were joint winners of the prize — awarded to students who are juggling work and family commitments — and each received £200. Rehana’s father and former Oldham councillor Jawaid Iqbal was there to see the prizes handed out.

He said: “It gives us a chance to reflect and remember what a good student Rehana was.

“We’re very grateful to UCO for agreeing to honour our daughter by giving out the award every year to students who deserve it.

“Her name and memory live on through the award, we are very proud of her.”

Law student Mohammed Umer scooped the best performing third-year award while Dianne Hornby proudly stepped up to collect her gong for the highest overall mark for her achievements in psychology.

Trainee teacher Wayne Davenport was awarded the Keith Webb award, named after the former director of the education consortium, for outstanding work.

The proud student collected a certificate, given out to recognise innovative classroom ideas.

Sue Bernhauser, dean at University Campus Oldham said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to reward the university’s high achievers in Oldham as part of the fifth anniversary celebrations.

“It was delightful to meet up with past students.”
