Fun-day tribute to Adam

Date published: 29 October 2010

A WHOLE community will join together tomorrow to celebrate the life of a much-loved local teenager.

Adam Mitchell (19), of Old Lane, Chadderton, was tragically killed when his moped hit a lamp-post near Granby Street playing fields on Sunday, August 8.

Now his friends and family have rallied around to put on a day of family fun at Yew Tree School playing fields in Chadderton, to pay tribute to the young man described as a “like a brother” to his closest friends.

Five-a-side football games, raffles and fund-raising stalls will be the main attractions at what is set to be a poignant day for those who knew him.

Celebratory basketball games, Adam’s favourite sport, will also be played in memory of the former Radclyffe School pupil.

Adam’s mum, Paula Mitchell, said: “He lit up everywhere he went.

“No matter what life threw at him he did it with a smile.

“His friends wanted to do the event, they talk about him all the time.

“They were more than friends, they were like a second family to Adam. He’ll never be forgotten and it is so heart-warming that so many people have come forward and feel the same way about him as we did.”

Money raised at the event, will be put towards a headstone for Adam’s grave at Hollinwood Cemetery, which will be placed in time for Christmas.

Adam’s memory will also live on, as his older sister has named her new-born after the brother she doted on.

Entry to the family fun day, which is open to everyone, is free and will be on 1-4pm.
