He said: “I’m really chuffed. I couldn’t be happier. I thought on hindsight I would do worse than I have done. It’s a surprise. It’s overwhelming.”

The school’s results have now shown sustained improvement over the past six years, with 84 per cent gaining five GCSE A* to C grades — up 16 per cent from last year.

Including maths and English the figure stands at 51 per cent, up 4 per cent on last year.

“As a specialist sports college the real team approach within school and the strong partnerships with parents, carers and the local community have paid off handsomely.

“I look forward to an even brighter future for Failsworth School as we continue to build upon the firm foundations laid by our record-breaking students for our continued success.”
