KNOLL MILL: now half gone
WORK to demolish the iconic Knoll Mill in Greenfield is well under way, with over half of what was once the towering structure now reduced to rubble.
One of the most controversial sites in the village, the imminent Tesco development has faced a barrage of opposition since the plans were revealed.
Locals were unsuccessful in opposing the plans at a public inquiry and permission was granted in 2005.
The bulldozers have now reached the original stone structure which many residents complain has become a derelict eyesore in the heart of the Greenfield.
Supporters and opponents are split down the middle, as local food-sellers say it will wipe out trade while frustrated shoppers are fed-up of driving to Oldham to the nearest superstore.
It will not be long before the site is flattened and passers-by will be able to see the vast space left between Chew Valley Road and Wiggett Construction’s latest development Heron’s Reach at the rear.
Tesco currently has plans to build a 25,000ft store.
