HUNDREDS of people flocked to Chadderton precinct for a bumper day of festive fun.
They started the countdown to December 25 at the annual Christmas lights switch-on and market.
The crowd was entertained with carols and music from Chadderton Town Band, North Chadderton Saxophone Band and the choirs from Mills Hill and St Herbert’s primary schools.
Special guests included Father Christmas, along with Chadderton Town Crier Reg Lord and his retinue.
Chadderton Prince and Princess Daniel Lane and Charlotte Savage had the honour of turning on the lights, which have been extended this year.
The pair from Yew Tree Primary were chosen after schools were invited to nominate Year 4 pupils for the honour.
Friday’s attractions started at noon and included an ice rink, roundabouts and a barbecue. Members of SHADES (St Herbert’s Amateur Dramatic and Entertainment Society) also dressed up in their pantomime costumes.
Michael Lawson, from the Christmas lights sub-committee, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day and everybody thinks the lights in Chadderton are better than ever.
“We are all very pleased at how it went — it was a real community event.”
