Our civic pride

STRIKING 200ft wall of poppies will be draped across Oldham Civic Centre when it is unveiled at 5.15pm today.

Six projectors carry the spectacular image — four on the roof of the Three Crowns pub in Manchester Street and two on the roof of Henshaw House.

Council leader Howard Sykes said: “At a time when every week brings us news of casualties among our forces in Afghanistan, the sacrifices others give to protect our freedoms are very clear. Oldham Council is very proud to show its support for the Royal British Legion’s 2009 Poppy Appeal. I’m sure everyone will join me in saying we have the deepest respect for those who have given their lives for the peace and security we enjoy today.” The display, which will cost £25,000 to project, is said to be visible from as far away as Merseyside and Cheshire.

Alan Noble, chairman of the Oldham Liaison of Ex-Service Associations, said: “We’re very touched. It’s truly spectacular and very much appreciated.”

It will be switched off every night at midnight until Wednesday.
