Organisers of Saddleworth’s summer show have received a financial boost to launch next year’s event.

Veolia Environmental Services presented a £4,750 cheque to Saddleworth and Oldham Metro Rotary clubs to share sponsorship of the spectacular with the Oldham Evening Chronicle.

The cheque was handed over at Saddleworth Rotary club’s headquarters at the White Hart at Lydgate by Bryan Pinder, Veolia’s general manager, Landfill UK.

He told members: “We are delighted to sponsor the Saddleworth show for a second year. Having attended this year’s event, I know how hard everyone worked to produce what was a fantastic family day with record attendances and perfect weather.

“We look forward to teaming up with the Chronicle and the Saddleworth and Oldham Metro Rotary clubs to repeat and, if possible, better last year’s success which produced record donations to local charities and good causes.

“Over the course of the year we have continued to strengthen our relationship with the local community and once again we will be exhibiting at the show to take the opportunity to meet residents in the vicinity of High Moor landfill and bring them up to date on progress at the site.”

He added: “This proved very successful last time with people signing up to www.veolia/highmoor.co. uk and we are looking forward to meeting more people at what promises to be an even bigger event.”

John Ainley, an Oldham solicitor and next year’s show director, said: “We are indebted to Veolia for such generous sponsorship.

“It is really appreciated they are prepared to put something back into the community, particularly in such difficult times.

“The show raises a very substantial amount for charity and this would not be possible without the help of local business.

“This donation, at such an early stage, enables us to plan ahead and make the show, once again, a major attraction in the area.”

Two deserving Oldham charities are among those who have already received a cash injection from the proceeds of this year’s show.

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and Christie Oldham appeal both received cheques for £2,500 and donations to other worthy causes are in the pipeline.

There was a bonanza turn out for this year’s show with a bumper crowd raising £18,000.

Next year’s event will be staged on Sunday, June 13, at Churchill playing fields, Greenfield.
