IT’S all change at Arkwright Street as the recycling centre gets a £33 million makeover.

Brand new modern facilities make the site more convenient for users with improved traffic flow and enhanced safety features.

Peter Heginbotham, chairman of Viridor Laing, the company responsible for the development, said: “This new facility with its modern and forward-thinking layout will make it easier for residents to segregate and recycle more of their waste in a simple-to-use and safe environment.”

Councillor Mark Alcock, Cabinet member for the environment and infrastructure, added: “This new facility is a community facility and will allow Oldham to become more self-sufficient in managing its municipal waste.

“The Household Waste Recycling Centre in Arkwright Street has specifically been designed to allow for at least 60 per cent recycling of all the household waste taken into the site.”

The Viridor Laing consortium will deliver the 25-year PFI waste management contract which involves more than £300 million of investment.

It is the largest in Europe and will handle 1.4 million tonnes of municipal waste generated in the region each year.

Viridor Laing will provide facilities and services to manage contract waste in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner.

This involves the reception, treatment and disposal of waste to increase levels of recycling, composting and recovery and reduce waste sent to landfill.

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) provides services for 973,000 households in Oldham, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.
