Bright idea to beat burglars

POLICE have come up with a bright idea to help residents in the battle against burglars.
Greater Manchester Police will be giving out 50,000 energy saving light bulbs to residents when the clocks go back this weekend.
At least half the light bulbs will go to those in receipt of benefits, with a maximum of two bulbs being allocated to each household.
They will be encouraged to use the bulbs, provided by energy giants E-on, in external lighting and hallways to deter burglars.
The low-energy bulbs will also allow people to leave lights on when they are out or overnight in vulnerable locations while keeping energy costs down.
This is the latest tactic being used by Operation Storm, Greater Manchester Police’s hard-hitting initiative to reduce burglaries and bring offenders to justice.
The clampdown has already led to almost 1,100 fewer victims of burglary since April 1 this year when compared to the same period last year.
There has also been 632 arrests and almost 200 raids on properties of suspected offenders in the past week.
Neighbourhood Policing officers will be distributing the bulbs and giving residents advice on how to keep themselves and their property safe.
A Burglary Battle Bus that is touring supermarkets and shopping centres will also be giving out the free bulbs.
Chief Supt Russ Jackson, who is leading Operation Storm, said: “Burglars love the dark and as the nights draw in they become more active.
“Leaving a light on makes them think twice about breaking into your property and decreases your chance of falling victim to this distressing crime.
“Using these lights on a timer switch can also leave burglars guessing on whether your home is occupied or not.”
