Villages are given transport lifeline

Hundreds of Uppermill and Greenfield residents will be given a new transport lifeline next week.

Speedwell Bus’s 353 service, which operates between Delph, Uppermill, Mossley and Ashton every two hours Monday-Saturday, is being diverted through the Carr Lane Estate from Monday.

Ward councillor John McCann said: “This is fantastic news for hundreds of residents in the Queensway, Carr Lane, Wood Square, Beech Avenue and Rush Hill areas.

“A lot of people without cars and many elderly folk live in this area and faced a long walk to Uppermill or Greenfield.

“Up to now, they have only had a two-hourly bus service on the 354 bus route from Denshaw, Uppermill and Greenfield to Ashton route.

“Now this will alternate with the diverted 353 route and double the bus service to hourly for hundreds of residents.

“It is particularly good news for residents in the new Wood Square sheltered housing development in the middle of the Carr Lane Estate.

“It is really important that people without cars have regular bus services giving them access to shops, doctors, libraries and other facilities in their local village.

“The 353 and 354 bus services also give direct access to Ashton town centre and enable people to change to the 184 Oldham bus in Uppermill and the 180 Oldham bus in Greenfield.”
