Be safe, be seen

ROAD safety advice is being given to Failsworth youngsters to help keep them safe as the dark nights set in.

The Co-operative Funeralcare in Oldham has teamed up with national road safety charity Brake to encourage schools to help make children aware about road safety, in particular, when the clocks go back an hour on Saturday night. For the second year running, the funeral directors in Oldham is donating 200 high-visibility reflective badges.

This year’s recipients will be pupils at Mather Street School in Failsworth.

There are 190 pedestrians or cyclists killed or injured every day on UK roads. John Walkden, from Co-operative Funeralcare, said: “We are helping to raise awareness of the importance of being visible on the road during dark nights.

“When the clocks go back, darker mornings and evenings mean that children need to take extra care on their journeys to and from school.”

Mather Street School head teacher Jacqui Adams said: “We are delighted to be supporting this initiative by Co-operative and Brake, which emphasises the importance of road safety to our pupils.”

Mr Walkden and Vanessa Calverley, from Co-operative Funeralcare, presented the badges to the pupils.
