CHRISTMAS revellers can swap traditional carols for festive pop classics thanks to a brand new Oldham choir.

Oldham Community Pop Choir has been formed by the borough’s renowned music service for singers of all ages and all levels of experience. The group, who will cover all types of pop and rock, will perform for the first time at the annual Music Centre Christmas Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Tuesday, December 15.

Councillor Kay Knox, Cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Choirs aren’t just about Handel and Haydn, they can also be about U2, Elbow and ABBA. The Music Service already does a fabulous job for our young people and this new initiative to move into the wider community sounds very exciting.

“I’m looking forward to hearing the choir when they perform at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in December.”

Martin Ashurst, from Oldham Music Service, added: “People sing in the bath, at football matches and in every-day life. It’s an enjoyable and healthy thing to do.”

The choir meets every Monday night from 7-9pm at Royton Youth Centre,Chapel Street. Contact Martin Ashurst on 0161-627 2332. to join.
