FIRE crews tackling a blaze at a youth centre in Coldhurst helped out when two cars collided only yards from the scene.

About 20 firefighters from Oldham and Chadderton were called to the Robin Hill Youth Centre, Trafalgar Street to find the roof of the single storey centre well alight.

A firefighter, from Ashton, said: “Two hours into fighting the fire we heard a bang and two cars had crashed 50 yards away at the junction of Rochdale Road.

“There were about six walking wounded but the crews didn’t have to cut anyone free.”

A man and a woman passenger in their 20s were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital by ambulance suffering neck and back injuries.

Officers spent four hours tackling Friday night’s fire and stayed at the scene all night.

It is not yet known how it started, but the centre was not being used at the time.

Coldhurst councillor Muhammad Uddin said: “It is a very well-used youth centre and it is disappointing that it will be out of use for a while.

“We will try to arrange alternative venues.”

Just two weeks ago, arsonists set fire to Sholver community centre in Sholver Lane during an arson spree which caused £20,000 of damage.
