Call for action on anti-social blight

RESIDENTS in a Saddleworth village are being urged to attend a meeting aimed at stopping their community being blighted by anti-social behaviour and litter.

The Street Scene Greenfield group (SSGG), part of Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association (GGRA), has called for action after constant reports of problems affecting the community.

Street Scene spokesman Peter Lowe said: “ We want residents, particularly young people, to examine and discuss the current situation.

“This begins with a central focus on the bridleway through Greenfield village and out to Dovestone Reservoir. Attention then needs to spread to surrounding communities.

“The meeting’s intention is to develop a co-ordinated approach to make the village and surrounding areas attractive and safe for residents and visitors.”

The GGRA has a remit to address a broad spectrum of issues affecting Greenfield, Grasscroft and beyond throughout Friezland, Lydgate and up to the moors.

Mr Lowe added: “The SSGG takes a more grassroots approach with an environmental agenda. Our current projects include obtaining a floral display, a growing Christmas tree with lights, and an annual lighting-up event, appropriate and clean road signs along with an attractive and safe environment.

“Litter and dog-fouling are major problems and can present serious health and safety risks. Our underlining theme is respect our village, environment and each other.”

Residents’ association chairman David McNeeney said: “Incidents are on the increase and members feel we must try to find a sustainable solution.

“It is in the interests of all residents to attend the meeting, join the debate to see how problems can be addressed and what is proposed for the future.”

The meeting will be chaired by SSGG and a panel will include police inspector Danny Milovanovic, Councillor Christine Wheeler and representatives from Oldham Council Street Scene, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Oldham Mountain Rescue team.

The meeting takes place on Monday at the Methodist Church, Chew Valley Road, Greenfield, beginning at 7.30pm.
