A CHANGE of venue has proved a winning strategy for a long-running chess club in Oldham.
3Cs (Children’s Chess Club), founded more than 30 years ago, has moved into its new home at St Edward’s Community Centre, Lees, and it was officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham, councillors Jim McArdle and Kay Knox.
A special presentation was made to former member and Oldham’s first chess Grandmaster, Stephen Gordon, for his achievements.
Roger Glover, club organiser, said: “We used to be based at Christ Church School in Chadderton but felt the community centre would be more suitable for a club of our size.
“We’ve spent £20,000 of our own money refurbishing the centre and on Thursday over 70 children attended the ceremony.
“The Mayor of Oldham unveiled a plaque, and we presented Stephen with an official scroll for achieving the status of Grandmaster.
“The club gives all the children in the borough a chance to compete regionally and we have been very successful, winning the Greater Manchester division eight years in a row.”
