A MUCH-LOVED former Oldham landlord, who also had strong links with local golf and rugby, has died aged 83.
Leslie Eyre, who ran the Star Inn, King Street, from 1975 to 1990, also served in the Navy during the Second World War.
Mr Eyre, who lived at Shawside Nursing Home, was an active member of Oldham Rugby Union Club and played hooker at Keb Lane in the 1950s and 1960s before serving as a committee member at Oldham Rugby League Club.
The father of three started his own engineering business — Eyre Brothers Oldham Ltd — which specialised in fitting out catering premises and restaurants throughout the borough with kitchen equipment.
His dedication to the industry saw him elected President of the National Association of Restaurant Engineers in 1969.
He was also a keen member of Oldham Golf Club, serving as both treasurer and secretary, before he suffered a stroke 10 years ago leaving him unable to play.
The Les Eyre Rose Bowl — an annual tournament held at the club, in Lees New Road, since 1996 — has been cancelled as it would have fallen on the same day as Mr Eyre’s funeral, which takes place on Thursday at Oldham Crematorium, from 1pm.
Mr Eyre leaves his wife, Ida, children Kathryn, David and Matthew and three grandchildren.
