FAR removed from his role as Martin Platt on the cobbles of “Coronation Street”, Saddleworth actor Sean Wilson is now playing the part of champion cheese-maker — and his creations are set to take centre stage at a renowned grocery.

Sean (44) has been signed up by Booths, the oldest family-owned and run grocery business in Britain.

He will be supplying his acclaimed new range of artisan Lancashire cheeses, including the crumbly Muldoon’s Picnic and the medium soft-blue Smelly Ha’peth, to a selection of Booths’ 26 stores.

The former soap favourite is enjoying great success with Saddleworth Cheese Company, which he set up 18 months ago.

He will be pick up a top award at this year’s Great British Cheese Festival over the weekend for his crumbly Lancashire.

Made using Saddleworth milk, the cheeses are already winning rave reviews.

Sean, a keen chef, said: “My cheeses have a distinctive character and feature locally-sourced ingredients.

“I have designed the labels to incorporate some of Saddleworth’s famous landmarks, including Pots and Pans and Indian’s Head.

“There is a real passion to get younger people into the art cheese-making.

“I wanted to launch something that was very Lancashire and full of character.”

Established in 1847, in Blackpool, Booths stocks more than 90 varieties of cheese, many of which are made by small local producers. Its cheese buyer Phil Godwin said: “Sean impressed us instantly —he’s just as passionate about creating great cheese as he is about acting — and that really shows in the finished product.”

The cheeses will be available in selected stores from the end of October.
