A MUM-of-two is embarking on an energy diet in an attempt to become Watt Watcher of the Year.
Ruth Gordon (36), a fitness fanatic and auditor, is the North West’s E.ON Watt Watchers finalist.
Mrs Gordon, of Chadderton, is one of just six finalists selected from across the UK to undertake the 90-Day Watt Watcher Challenge’ to cut her energy consumption.
The Watt Watcher who reduces their consumption the most will be crowned the E.ON Watt Watcher of the Year 2009 and get £1,000.
Last year’s winning Watt Watcher, Joanne Davenport from Manchester, reduced her family’s energy consumption by a massive 57 per cent.
The nationwide competition, launched by TV presenter Melinda Messenger, who is also taking part in the challenge, aims to help families from across the UK reduce their “energy wastelines” by adopting a leaner, greener attitude towards their home energy usage.
Mrs Gordon said: “I was thrilled to hear that I’ve been chosen as a Watt Watcher and can’t wait to step up to the 90-Day Challenge.
“Now I just need to get the family going green — though, with the promise of saving pennies and helping save the planet, I’m sure this won’t be a problem.”
E.ON’s green-queen Emma Thompson will judge the challenge, but not before visiting Mrs Gordon’s home to give her an energy audit and give them the tools and knowledge to help them embark on the challenge.
She said: “Simply watching your ‘energy wasteline’ can have a considerable impact on the amount of electricity and gas you use — and this can have a positive effect on both the environment and your bills.”
E.ON Watt Watchers was launched after research revealed that a massive 83 per cent of the country are unaware of the savings a few simple lifestyle changes could make to their energy bills.
