MYSTERY still surrounds why two men — who police suspect are behind the murder of Amran Khan — were bizarrely pulled out of the River Mersey in Cheshire on Sunday.
The duo, both 26 and from Oldham, were arrested on suspicion of killing the father-of-two who was shot in Nuggett Street, Glodwick, on Friday night. They have not been named.
Police from the Cheshire Constabulary were called to a street in Runcorn at 11.20am on Sunday after passers-by spotted the men in the river.
They were taken to hospital then arrested by officers from Greater Manchester Police.
A GMP spokesman said officers do not know what the two men were doing in the river at the time.
Mr Khan (29), known as Manny, was gunned down moments after putting his two daughters aged four and one to bed.
He died in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Royal Oldham.
The incident was the second fatal shooting in Oldham in two months following the death of Junaid Khan (21), from Werneth, who was shot in a doctors’ surgery car park in Block Lane, Chadderton, in July. It has now raised fears of a deadly tit-for-tat gang war in the borough.
No-one has been charged for Junaid’s murder but two men have been charged with possessing ammunition.
Amran Khan’s brother Gulfan (35) was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder after Bolton shop worker Nasar Hussein was shot six times in Salford.
Police said that was a case of mistaken identity. Days later, Junaid was shot dead in cold blood.
Gulfan Khan is currently on bail until November and was one of 13 people arrested at the time.
