Community leaders took a tour of the new £17 million Christie radiotherapy centre which will bring treatment closer to home for Oldham cancer patients.

The centre, which is set for completion in February, is the first in a network of Christie radiotherapy centres where local patients will be able to access first class radiotherapy treatments from Christie experts in their own town.

The radiotherapy centre will treat patients for the most common cancers like breast, prostate and lung while patients with rare and complex cancers will continue to be treated at the Withington site.

Christie doctors, specialist radiographers, nurses and other medical experts will be able to treat 70 people a day.

David Makin, governor and chairman of the Oldham sub group at The Christie, said; “The Christie radiotherapy centre in Oldham is fantastic news for local patients and the purpose of the visit was to raise awareness within the Oldham community of our new development and opportunities around becoming members of The Christie.

“As the centre is due to open early next year, membership is an important opportunity for people to represent local views at the highest level within The Christie.”

As a foundation trust, The Christie has a membership of over 13,000 people including 1,800 Oldhamers.
