Residents fight back against yobs

Police say newly-installed alleygates are helping to cut anti-social behaviour in Royton.

The wrought-iron gates, at Royton precinct between Sparkles Adventure Play and Royton Medical Centre, follow concerns from residents and local businesses.

PC Dave Brierley, of the Royton and Shaw Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We had problems with youths congregating and getting involved in anti-social behaviour as this area is dimly-lit and quite secluded.

“This was causing problems for local businesses and residents who were feeling intimidated by this behaviour.

“In response we have worked with the Community Safety Services to get the gates installed. As a result, incidents of anti-social behaviour have dropped considerably.

“I believe these alleygates will improve community spirit by giving residents and businesses a sense of ownership of the alleys near where they live and work.”

The gates are the result of partnership working between Oldham Council’s Community Safety Services and Greater Manchester Police.
