HEADS were bowed yesterday as the town remembered the dark days of 1940.

Veterans, civilians, cadets and Sunday shoppers took part at the annual Battle of Britain service at Oldham war memorial.

Mayor of Oldham Councillor Jim McArdle laid a wreath in honour of those who defended their country from air attack in World War II.

Proud standard bearers from ex-servicemen’s associations listened in silence as the Last Post rung out across Yorkshire Street.

There was a also a parade through the town centre led by pipers in full regalia.
