Oldham Council report
THE cost of the contriversial Metrolink extension into Oldham town centre was raised during questions last night.
Saddleworth Parish councillor Ken Hulme asked what was the overall cost to the council, the cost in successive years and the impact on council tax before any savings. He also asked whether the council was willing to allow council taxpayers the right to say whether they wanted to incur the additional cost before the scheme went ahead.
Council leader Howard Sykes said overall costs would be £84 million with a total cost of £122 million until 2045/46, but impact on council tax was not available.
He said all the information was available on the council website.
He also said councillor Hulme had urged him to find a way forward with Metrolink that did not involve a congestion charge.
He said: “Oldham benefits from one of the largest chunks of the £20 million park and ride scheme.
“Any council tax increase next year under this administration will be at 2.5 per cent or less.
“We believe we have come to the best possible outcome for the borough of Oldham.”
