Sporting chance

HUNDREDS of youngsters proved they were good sports when they took part in the second weekend of the Saddleworth Olympics.

Events were hailed a resounding success after waterlogged conditions forced organisers to cancel some of the sports on the opening days.

This weekend’s action kicked off with basketball and rounders at Saddleworth School on Saturday, as well as rugby at Churchill Playing Fields.

Youngsters represented seven village groups, with yesterday’s focus moving to the swimming competitions at Saddleworth Pool. Ben Hilton, who heads the volunteers who run the annual event, said: “The weekend has been a resounding success. Last weekend was great, but the weather did not help.

“The weather just makes such a massive difference and all the children had wonderful smiles on their faces. That’s what it’s all about.”

Torrential rain left much of Churchill Playing Fields under water last week and Mr Hilton revealed that events may be moved to Saddleworth School next year.

Mr Hilton added: “The thought is to move most of our events to Saddleworth School next year because Churchill Playing Fields cannot be relied upon. It is very poor when we are trying to get children into sport.”

The Saddleworth Olympics conclude next week when events will include badminton, tennis, netball and football.

The trophies and spirit of the games awards will also be handed out.
