THE dream of bringing a touch of LA glamour to the hills of Hollinwood could soon become a reality.

Local business man Frank Rothwell has now submitted a planning application to resurrect the 8ft high letters that became Oldham’s version of the famous Hollywood sign.

The Highways Agency disagreed and removed the letters, which were situated close to Lime Lane sports ground off Roman Road, saying they were a distraction and danger to motorists on the M60 .

But Mr Rothwell, who owns Manchester Cabins, refuses to give up on his quest to give Oldhamers a much-needed boost and attract business to the area.

He came up with the idea after learning that Manchester was twinned with LA and thought it appropriate that Oldham shared some of the spotlight.

Oldhamers soon got behind the campaign. A “Bring Back the Hollinwood Sign” group on the social networking website Facebook attracted hundreds of supporters. In his application, Mr Rothwell says that the proposed spot — 65ft up the southbound carriageway — is a prominent position and ideal for the sign.

He also says that the sign would help to give Hollinwood back its identity after the M60 extension cut it into two parts.

Mr Rothwell, who doesn’t think the sign will distract motorists, believes the letters would add interest to the M60 along with other recognisable features such as the Trafford Centre and the pyramid in Stockport.

The proposed structure would be made out of steel plate, built on secure foundations and kept well away from traffic.

Oldham Council’s planning committee members will debate the application and decide the outcome at a future meeting.
