Fergie’s family in crash horror

SIR Alex Ferguson’s former daughter-in-law and grandson, from Royton, have been seriously injured in a road accident.

Former Crompton House pupil Nadine Ferguson (30), the ex-wife of the Manchester United manager’s son Darren, was airlifted to hospital in Manchester after the crash in Cheshire, yesterday morning.

The couple’s 10-year-old son Charlie is being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, where he he underwent surgery last night. He is to be “very serious, but stable”. His six-year-old sister Grace was treated for minor injuries at Leighton Hospital, Crewe.

Mrs Ferguson’s black Vauxhall Corsa was in a head-on collision with a Ford Fiesta in Trap Street, Lower Withington, Macclesfield, at about 8.25am.

It is believed she was driving the children to school and it took fire fighters almost an hour to cut her free from the car.

It is reported she suffered a shattered pelvis and broken leg but her condition worsened and was described as “serious.”

The 17-year-old Fiesta driver suffered a leg injury.

A local resident, Lynda Syers said: "The car was surrounded by paramedics and firemen. I could see the driver in the passenger seat sobbing her eyes out.

"She was cradling her young daughter and trying to comfort her, but they were both completely distraught. I heard his mum saying over and over, 'My poor babies'. She was clearly in shock."

Mrs Ferguson once worked in Oldham before she married Darren (37), in 2003, and they moved to Cheshire.

She is divorced from the Peterborough United boss, who recently guided the club to promotion for the second season running.

Last year, Darren Ferguson was fined £1,500 after admitting assaulting Nadine during a row at Sir Alex’s £2 million home in Wilmslow.

The couple split in 2007 and Darren remarried last week, tying the knot in a low-key ceremony in Lincolnshire with freelance writer Nicola Noblet. (33)

Sir Alex is reported to have been torn between staying with his players, who he saw beat Arsenal 3-1 in London last night to earn a place in the Champions League final, or rush to his grandson’s hospital bedside.

Police are investigating the smash and have appealed for witnesses.
