Star to shine once again?

PLANNING permission has been lodged to turn a Saddleworth landmark into a stylish pub-restaurant with accommodation.

The Star Inn at Scouthead, which holds a key position at the junction of Platting Road, Doctor Lane and Oldham Road, has been empty for more than four years.

But now, the Star Inn Property Company, headed by Charles Brierley, managing director of The White Hart at Lydgate, has bought the pub for an undisclosed six-figure sum.

Under the new plans, the inn, which already has seven bedrooms, would have an eighth added when a flat-roofed extension at the rear of the property is demolished.

Mr Brierley, who also co-owns Dinnerstone in Uppermill, said: “The Star Inn will make an exciting addition to our portfolio.”

He bought the White Hart at Lydgate in 1994, and turned it into a highly-acclaimed pub restaurant.

The Star has remained empty since the last landlord left. It belonged to a Midlands pub chain which released it from its portfolio for sale.

The new property company has been working with Oldham-based Hall Needham Associates on plans for the inn, which has stunning views over the Pennines and was once a favourite watering hole for tourists visiting Saddleworth.

One resident said: “We are delighted things are moving forward. To invest in a property like this in these troubled times is a real statement of trust in the community.

“The inn has looked very forlorn but we are sure it will really shine again particularly as it stands in such a prominent position.”

It is in the green belt and an integral part of a conservation area. The application will go before Oldham Council shortly.
