RESIDENTS in Chadderton are being warned to be wary of rogue traders who charge extortionate fees as well as stealing from the customer's home.
The GMP Chadderton team warned that rogue traders are back in the area after an incident which saw the owner of a house in South Chadderton overcharged for roof work and money stolen from their home.
On August 2 males are said to have attended the address stating that work on the roof was needed at a cost of £900. The following day they returned and said a further £4,000 was needed to complete more work.
As well as this they distracted the occupant while one of the traders entered the house and stole money.
GMP Chadderton, posting on Facebook, said: "Not content with the over charging, whilst they distracted the occupant, one of the traders entered the house and stole money. Please think twice about employing a cold caller and always, always get a second quote."
They also advised how to spot the signs of traders in the area who have sinister motives.
Possible signs of a rogue trader:
* Traders have been cold calling in the area
* A builder's van is parked nearby, particularly one that doesn't include a company name or contact details
* Building or maintenance work on your neighbour's garden or house starts unexpectedly
* Poor quality work is visible on the roof, driveway, or property
* Your neighbour appears anxious or distressed
* Your neighbour visits the bank, building society, or post office more frequently, particularly if they are accompanied by a trader
If suspicions are raised then residents are advised to ask their neighbour if things are ok and suggest calling a relative or carer on their behalf.
Noting vehicle registration numbers, keeping hold of flyers that are dropped through your door and also asking if the trader has left any paperwork and put it in a food bag.
If a crime is suspected, call the Citizens Advice helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or if a situation with a trader becomes volatile, call the police.
