THE police response to a "domestic incident" in Shaw which became an alleged hostage situation is being investigated.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed that it is investigating last month's incident in Pemberton Way.

Officers were called to a house there in the early hours of July 25 after receiving reports of concerns for the welfare of a woman, the IPCC said.

Officers then returned a short time later when a hostage situation began, a spokesman said. It was resolved around 26 hours later and a woman and a child were taken to hospital.

Marc Schofield (30) of Peel Terrace, Dukinfield, has appeared in court charged with assault and possession of an imitation firearm and false imprisonment.

He will appear at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester later this month.

GMP referred the case to the IPCC. Catherine Bates, IPCC commission delegate, said: "Our independent investigation is in its very early stages.

"We will look at the police response to the initial report of a domestic incident and the actions of officers involved in dealing with this report.

"We are aware of the substantial press coverage around this matter and the events that unfolded.

"We have carefully considered the referral from GMP and have decided to investigate this independently; this is common when an incident has resulted in serious injuries, and where there appears to have been prior police contact."

The criminal investigation continues.
