We meet again, return of the Yanks weekend

SADDLEWORTH will be stepping back in time once again as the annual Yanks Weekend returns in August.

The two-day spectacular event, which recreates some of the silver-screen magic from classic film "Yanks", will feature military vehicles, re-enactors, vintage stalls and 1940s-style entertainment.

The film, starring Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave, was shot on site in Saddleworth, Stalybridge, Oldham and Hyde, and since 2001 a small team of volunteers have been celebrating the area's links to the film.

This year's weekend, taking place on August 5 and 6, will take place at Saddleworth School, Uppermill, with numerous attractions including, Militaria and Vintage stalls, Military Vehicle encampment and Home front and military displays.

There will also be re-enactors, 1940s singers and dancers and a Tea Dance from 11am until 4pm on Saturday.

Esme's Vintage Closet will also be doing a vintage and reproduction fashion show while Saddleworth author Judith Barrow will be joining the fun ans signing copies of her new book "A Hundred Tiny Threads".

Admission to the event at Saddleworth School, Uppermill, will be £5 adult, under 16s £3 and a family ticket £12 (2 adults & 2 children under 16 with free admission to re-enactors.

There will also be two parades on Sunday the first featuring Oldham Scottish pipe band, Standard bearers, Veterans from past and present conflicts and local Cadets.

Tickets are also on sale for an event featuring the Kalamazoo dance band on the Saturday evening at Saddleworth School from 7.30pm.
