A PETITION to review the sentences of those involved in a hit and run collision which killed two young cousins in Oldham on New Year's Eve has gathered over 500 signatures within days of being set up.

The petition, named "Justice for our beautiful girls", has been launched in a bid to increase the sentences of those involved in the incident which killed Helena Kotlarova (12) and Zaneta Krokova (11).

The girls were hit by a Peugeot 807 as they crossed Ashton Road at 7pm last year. The car sped away from the scene and those involved tried to cover up the crime.

Driver Gabor Hegedus (39) pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving, and attempting to pervert the course of public justice. Last month he was sentenced to four years in prison. Others involved in the cover-up were also sentenced to shorter jail sentence for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The families of the young girls have called on the courts to increase Hegegus' sentence and have welcomed news that the Attorney General is set to consider whether the sentence was "unduly lenient".

The petition, which was set up last week, will be delivered to David Lidington MP, Secretary of State for Justice.

The petition states: "We as the family of our girls are really angry and sadden with this decision, because we feel that he should get more years for what he done to us as a family. We know that it not will bring our girls back but it will give us at least satisfaction that he gets what he deserve for what he done to them. We will never be the same and our pain will never heal but we will have small hope for our girls."
