A MIDDLE-AGED man has been targeting the elderly in Chadderton by claiming he works for United Utilities.

Police released a warning after United Utilities alerted them the man had been asking for £500 from property owners in Foxdenton Lane.

The utilities company, which does not ask for money at the doorstep, has released advice to help residents feel safe after the incident on Tuesday.

Chadderton's local policing team said: "Three days ago a man in his mid-50s wearing a black vest and pants was calling at homes in the Foxdenton Lane area purporting to be from United Utilities.

"He was telling the occupants that work needed to be done at the rear of their property and they needed to pay him £500.

"The man only approached houses that contained elderly people. Please be aware. If you have elderly relatives let them know. If you have been a victim of such an offence please dial 101 to report the matter."

If residents are unsure about a caller's identity, United Utilities urged people to contact them on 0345 6723 723 to check their identity. They said in a statement: "If you're having problems with your water supply or we need to fit or fix a meter for you, we may need to come into your house.

"All our visits to your home will be made by properly trained employees and we follow a strict code of practice."

United Utilities employees carry an identity card complete with their name, reference number and a colour photograph.

Where possible, vans used and clothing worn by legitimate staff will carry the company's logo.

To help residents protect against bogus callers, the firm recommends leaving doors locked, asking to see the caller's ID, asking the caller to wait outside while verifying their details, asking the caller to leave if residents are unsure if they are genuine and calling the police immediately if a caller refuses to go.
