SOME people may have done a double take when they saw football legend Jeff Stelling walking through Oldham on Friday.

But it wasn't a case of mistaken identity as the Gillette Soccer Saturday host was in the borough as part of his March for Men to raise money and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.

Oldham marks the halfway point for Jeff as he walks from the South West at Exeter City FC and finishes in the North East at Newcastle United FC.

Once finished, he will have clocked up 400 miles and visited 40 football clubs over the course of 15 days with the aim of raising £500,000.

Upon leaving Oldham Athletic's Boundary Park, Jeff was joined by Latics director Simon Brooke and Great Britain and Leeds Rhinos rugby legend Kevin Sinfield, who were accompanying him to Blackpool.

Tired

Leaving at 8am, and in high spirits, Jeff said: "It's early doors so far, we've been walking for about an hour and a quarter. It's a nice morning, there's lots of sunshine, we have been in monsoons before.

"The walk will take us about 10 hours, you try not to think about that because it seems a long way away.

"You walk with great people and the first part of the day is full of chatter, then you have a bit of a quiet spell once people get tired towards the end but then you pick up by the finish."

He said: "We're trying to raise awareness and a lot of the money will be going into research to help early diagnosis because men don't seem to talk about it and we want to change that.

"There are so many charities out there which are all good, deserving causes, all fighting to make themselves known and Prostate Cancer UK is just one of those that we are trying to raise the profile of.

"It's all the other guys I'm walking with that raise the funds," Jeff added. "I have been very lucky to be honest, I have never had a day's ill health in my life. So if I can help in any way that's good. The people walking with me, they are fantastic, inspirational people. If anybody wants to help please visit the March for Men webpage."
