Kenny ready for a loving home

KING Kenny is back on his throne - six months after being the victim of "the worst case of neglect" animal rescue staff had ever seen.

Kenny was close to death when Pennine Pen Animal Rescue took him in in November after he was abandoned in nearby Kenyon Avenue.

He had been starved to within an inch of his life and was suffering from the severe skin condition sarcoptic mange and secondary infections which caused him terrible pain and hair loss.

For weeks, manager Michael Waugh wasn't sure whether the Pakistani Mastiff would pull through and thousands mourned his plight and anxiously monitored his progress through Pennine Pen's Facebook page.

But thanks to the love and attention of re-homing centre staff, Kenny is ruling the roost once more and is now looking for a new home.

"He was very close to death when he came in and it was touch and go for weeks," said Michael.

"He was around half the weight he should have been and had terrible skin infections which required antibiotics. It was round-the-clock care initially.

"He even had to have two eye operations.

"It's incredible how he's pulled through. He does have a few trust issues and that's going to be the biggest hurdle for whoever re-homes him.

"Once he gets to know someone he's absolutely amazing but not surprisingly it takes him time to trust someone again after what he's been through.

"He's also very strong so it would need to be someone who could control him when he goes for walks."

Kenny has become something of a local celebrity and drew the crowds at a recent Pennine Pen fundraising dog show.

"Lots of people came along just to meet Kenny," said Michael.

"He is a brilliant dog, he just needs the right special person to come along and offer him a home."
