Running to remember our fallen officers

UPPERMILL FC are inviting locals to join them at their home ground on a two mile fun run to remember fallen officers.

The run, which will see players from the club and local participants travel around Churchill Fields, Greenfield, on June 3 from 10am as they show their support for Run to Remember in aid of the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial fund.

Run to Remember, which started on April 15, aims to raise money for the charity by seeing participants around the country complete 200 miles in 100 days at a pace of two miles per day.

In September 2012, PC Nicola Hughes (23), of Diggle, and her colleague PC Fiona Bone (32) of Sale, were murdered in a gun and grenade attack as they investigated a hoax burglary call in Mottram, Tameside.

PC Nicola Hughes joined Greater Manchester Police in 2009, serving all three years with the Tameside division.

PC Fiona Bone, who was planning a civil partnership, had served with GMP for five years, starting out as a special constable. She lived in Sale with her partner Clare and her five-year-old daughter.

Nicola's father, Bryn Hughes, set up the memorial which aims to provide learning opportunities and pre-employment skills in the form of support through grants or services to children who have suffered the loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as a murder or manslaughter.

Michelle Simpson, Uppermill FC Club Secretary, said: "We just thought it was a very good way of showing support and raising money for the charity. A few of us do running anyway and we're hoping to raise as much money possible.

"It is quite an informal run, it is not a timed race. People can donate via the JustGiving page or just throw money in our bucket on the day.

"It is really about just showing our support for the charity, it is a very good charity and also very local."
