STAFF were praised for their dedication, hard work and commitment after each giving over 25 years to serve the borough.

Oldham Council staff turned out for the Long Service Awards with a guest and manager as they received their trophy from the Mayor of Oldham.

A total of 10 staff members were invited to the ceremony and special lunch in the Mayor's Parlour, hosted by chief executive Carolyn Wilkins.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Derek Heffernan said: "To have 10 people who have managed 25 years' service with the council is something to be celebrated.

"I know the kind of work they have put in on behalf of the people of Oldham and they are very deserving of the awards that are being celebrated today."

One of the recipients of the award, John Urysz, praised the council for their support during his term of employment, which has included 14 years as a day-time security guard and five years in his current role as a static guard at the Civic Centre.

John, who also serves in the Oldham Branch Fusilier Association, said: "In my time at the council I have had five heart attacks, kidney failure and lost my son. The council have really stood by me through everything."

Another member of staff to receive the Long Service Award was Kim Humphrys, who currently works as an administration officer in sports development.

When Kim started out in the job 25 years ago she helped register child minders and nurseries although this work is now carried out by Ofsted.

Kim has also worked within the social work department at the Royal Oldham Hospital as well as Royton's High Barn Day Centre.

She said: "I think the camaraderie with my colleagues has been great. I have always worked with really nice people. Working at the day centre was especially rewarding." Tracey Whitworth-Hilton, Christine Wilson, Allison Russell, Glenn Shaw, Johnpaul Aston, Janat Czajkowski, Farhat Nazir and Colette Cooper also received the award during Monday's event.

Carolyn Wilkins said: "It is great to see so many members of staff receiving these awards.

"It is a real achievement."
