POOR old plus-sized pooch Poppy is being forced to fight the flab in a bid to find her forever friends.
In fact, the 11-year-old chocolate Labrador has to lose almost half her weight - the equivalent of four Yorkshire Terriers - if she's to reach a healthy size.
But according to the Dogs Trust Manchester, which has put Poppy on a strict doggy diet and given her a tailored exercise regime, she will soon be trim and fighting fit and all ready for a new family to take her home.
Dawn Bishop, Dogs Trust Manchester Rehoming Centre manager, said: "As is the case for many of us as we get older, Poppy has piled on the pounds, which is a real shame as she is a lively girl.
"She loves to run around in our play areas but, of course, her weight means she gets tired easily which is such a shame as she obviously loves to be active but can't have as much fun as she'd like due to her weight."
Poppy was handed over the the team when here owner's working hours meant she was left alone for several hours a day and she's now looking for a new home, preferrably with children over the age of eight and another canine companion.
Dawn said: "Excess weight puts strain on a dog's body, particularly the heart and joints, so it's really important that throughout their lives every dog has regular exercise and isn't over-fed.
"Despite being an older lady, Poppy is definitely not looking for a retirement home where she can rest her paws.
"She will definitely be even livelier when she has lost weight, so Poppy's new owners will need to keep to her healthy diet and exercise regime so she can join in fully with all family life has to offer."
If you would like to give Poppy a new home call 0300 303 0292 or visit Dogs Trust Manchester at Parkway, Denton, Manchester, M34 3SG.
