Brass band looking for new home

A team of dedicated musicians have become a band on the run ... in a bid to find a new home.

Greenfield Brass Band were promoted to the second section of the brass band gradings this year.

It follows a successful year with a string of prize-winning performances and claiming 4th place at the North West Area Championships in Blackpool - narrowly missing out on a place at the National Finals.

During the next few weeks they are busy practising for Buxton Contest at the beginning of May and for their favourite day of the year, Whit Friday. But moving to the second section presents the band with new challenges, performing more complex pieces and pitting their skills against established higher section bands.

However, the immediate future is providing a tough challenge for the band because their home, Greenfield Conservative Club is to cease to trade on Sunday. Band secretary Andy Clayton said: "We'd like to place on record our thanks to the Conservative Club committee for their support over the years.

"But the band share their disappointment that a place which has been central to village life for so long has been sadly forced to shut down.

"Now comes the difficult task of finding a new rehearsal room. We need a space big enough to accommodate a band of 25 -30 players twice a week.

"We would also require storage space for spare instruments and percussion, plus room for our music library," he explained.

"If anyone could offer space or assistance either on a temporary or more permanent basis then we would be very grateful."
