HUNDREDS of residents turned out to a special benefit event for a "little soldier" battling leukaemia.

Elliott Ardill (6), from Bardsley, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia in November and given a 50/50 chance of survival.

The family fun day at the White Hart, in Royton, raised more than £1,700 for the pupil at Woodhouses Voluntary Primary School.

Event host Joey Matthews said: "It was a fantastic day. It couldn't have gone any better.

"We are really pleased to have been able to give just over £1,700 to Chelsea to support Elliott.

"He hasn't had a Christmas or birthday or anything to look forward to so hopefully this money will be there for him.

"Thank you to everyone for being so generous. The cakes sold out, the sweet cart sold out, the music was great."

Live music featuring Joey Matthews, Ricky Stone, Hayley Jane, Pete Young and 11 other acts kept visitors entertained.

There was also a raffle, tombola, auction and barbecue, while children made the most of guest appearances from Mickey and Minnie, face-painting and a bouncy castle.

Oldham-based cake makers Cupcakes on Wheels set up a stall for the event and were joined by several other businesses including Nightlife Promotions.

Cameron Boland, who ran a photo keyring stand at the event, said: "It was an amazing event, packed out from start to finish, and it was so nice to see so many people out in support of Elliott."

Several residents commented on social media after the event. Rachel Chamberlain said it was a "brilliant day" and Sue Dixon said "it was buzzing."

Elliott's mum Chelsea Limerick said: "The event at the White Hart was brilliant. We're really grateful for everyone's support."

The family are now awaiting the results of a bone marrow transplant, due this week.
