Man is arrested after fire siege

A MAN was arrested in connection with a Royton flat fire in which a firefighter was assaulted.

A police investigation is ongoing following the incident in Bamford Street which involved a "six-hour siege."

The Chronicle reported how a crew from Chadderton were called to reports of a living room fire on Thursday night.

A man barricaded himself in a bedroom with a knife during the incident, Greater Manchester Police said.

It is understood there was a six-hour siege while police negotiators tried to coax the occupant out of the room.

During the call-out the man allegedly hit a firefighter on his protective headgear with an unknown item. The firefighter received treatment for minor injuries.

Weapons including knives and a crossbow were reportedly carried out of the property by police.

The occupant was eventually removed from the property and was taken to hospital for assessment.

A man was later arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
