A NEW initiative has been launched in Oldham to combat loneliness and isolation.

Mum-of-one Alexandra Hoskyn has set up the Chatty Café Scheme to create a space for residents to talk and enjoy each other's company.

The idea will see cafés across Oldham designate a Chatter & Natter table where customers can sit if they would like to talk with other residents.

Alexandra, from Lees, said: "I'm trying to build a movement.

"Loneliness is a dirty word and can create a stigma for those who are experiencing it.

"Ultimately my idea might help people who are isolated but I've named it the Chatty Café because it's about creating something positive."

The scheme was set up after Alexandra found herself in search of good company while sat in a supermarket café with her four-month-old son Henry Smith, now one.

She said: "Henry wasn't great company and I was feeling fed up. I was after conversation to make me feel human.

"I looked round the café and saw an elderly lady who looked just as down and a young guy with severe additional needs and his support.

"I started to think about the positive impact we could have on each other if we could all have a chat."

The scheme is primarily about creating opportunities for people to talk rather than developing long-term friendships although Alexandra said it would be great if this happens organically.

For a one-off £5 donation, cafés that participate in the scheme are given a table sign and poster, and listed on the Chatty Café website.

Alexandra, a social worker in Tameside, said: "When you're feeling lonely, a short five-minute interaction with another human can brighten your day.

"A Chatter & Natter table creates a space for people to talk - whether it's literally for five minutes while you down a brew or an hour of good conversation.

"We're not trying to build friendships - just simple interactions to combat loneliness and to, just maybe, have a big impact on someone's day."

The not-for-profit Chatty Café Scheme is currently looking for funding support to get the idea off the ground.

They hope to attract a range of venues, from village cafés to those in supermarkets and high street chains. The first 10 firms to get in touch will receive a free table sign and poster.
