Conservative club appears closed for good

IT IS understood that Crompton Conservative Club on Queen Street has closed its doors for the final time.

The building appears to be vacant with the doors of the premises of the Shaw-based club completely boarded.

One resident told the Chronicle he saw people loading a van with items from the premises on Sunday and believed it was shut from then on.

The closure was cause for concern for Rebecca Flemming who took to Facebook to ask for help when she found out she wouldn't be able to run her dance school, RFDance, from the venue.

Fortunately she was able to find a base in Tara Leisure, Shaw, not far from Queen Street.

A post on the RFDance Facebook page read: "Following my earlier post I am now very happy to announce that classes will continue exactly as normal - but at our new venue, Tara Leisure in Shaw.

"There is still a space for parents to sit and wait if they wish and there is also a gym across the road in case anyone would like a quick workout while I'm teaching. Thank you everyone for all your support. It's much appreciated."

A sign on the front of the Conservative Club informs people that the Weight Watchers meetings, which run Wednesday 9.15am and 6pm, have moved to Shaw Comrades, Manchester Road, with access gained via the side door.

The Conservative Club served the area well in its heyday, holding fundraisers and giving people a place to play darts, socialise, and meet to play board games as well as being the venue for performances from the Houghton Weavers.
