FORMER Premier League footballer Steve Morgan has teamed up with Oldham College.

An ex-pupil of the former Grange School in Oldham, Morgan has signed as coach of the college's football academy, which offers students twice-weekly, professional coaching while they work towards a range of sports qualifications.

The tough defender (48) played in the top flight for Coventry City for three years from 1993. His other teams in a distinguished 14-year professional career include Blackpool, Plymouth Argyle, Wigan, Bury, Burnley and Hull City.

Morgan retired from competitive football in 2001 and is a former Oldham Athletic Under-15s coach.

He said: "Playing any sport, but especially football, builds teamwork and leadership skills.

Progress

"It strengthens students' discipline and the football academy offers them the opportunity to progress and fulfil their dreams."

The talented academy team was recently crowned English College Football Association North-West champions.

It hopes to recruit enough players next year for a second side.
