THE family of a dad who died in a collision in Chadderton have paid tribute to him.
Muhammed Shafique (30), from Chadderton, was driving a Toyota Yaris travelling north on Broadway when it was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.
The Yaris rolled several times before colliding with the traffic lights in the middle of the road and coming to a stop.
Neighbours tried desperately to save Muhammed but he was taken to hospital where he died.
The 37-year-old driver of the Fiesta was also taken to hospital for minor injuries and was later discharged. Muhammed's family have paid tribute to him, saying: "Muhammed was a truly loving husband, father, brother and son. He will be sadly missed by his family, relatives, friends and all those who knew him.
"We would like to thank everyone for their love and support."
Michelle McMullen and her husband Terence, both 38, who live opposite where the accident happened, were two of the first people at the scene.
Michelle said: "We were sitting in the living room and we heard a really loud bang. We ran out and we knew straight away it was really bad. Someone had already rang 999.
"But he was motionless inside the car and it smelt really strongly of petrol, and we thought we had to get him out in case it exploded. My husband and another guy dragged him out and moved him a safe distance away.
"There was a nurse in a passing car who had stopped and she took over and looked after him until the paramedics arrived. They were performing CPR on him.
"It's so sad he didn't make it. I can't stop thinking about it. Our thoughts go out to his family."
Sgt Lee Westhead, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family. I cannot imagine what they are going through. Our investigation is still ongoing and we are continuing to appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dash-cam footage to come forward."
