Carl with his latest book
THE grammar and the spelling are not what you might find in an old-fashioned, London-produced national broadsheet newspaper for example, but that's a big part of the charm which engrosses Carl H Spiers' latest Oldham book I'm on my way...the twists and turns of being a DJ/promoter.
Incredibly this is the 12th publication local legend Spiers has seen go to print - a phenomenal achievement in anyone's book - and it's no less enthralling than the previous 11. This time Spiers, now in his mid-50s, delves into some of his experiences and recalls some of the terrific characters and venues he has come across over the past two decades or more.
I'm on my way is a fascinating read. Split into numerous sections, he recounts numerous DJ gigs in different areas of Oldham, while the chapters on the northern soul scene provide some great recollections of that particular, ongoing, scene in the town.
Spiers also talks at length about his Cat's Whiskers reunion night while in terms of promoting, a number of truly special "An Audience With...'"nights are recalled.
Read about characters like ex-London gangster "Mad" Frankie Fraser, Frank Bruno, Joe Royle and Andy Goram as they spun their tales of joy and woe to the local masses, all thanks to Spiers. There's so much more, too.
The 156-page, glossy, picture-packed I'm on my way book is now available from the front counter at the Oldham Chronicle offices on Union Street.
Spiers will be selling and signing his latest book at an official launch event, which takes place at the Three Cs club, Coldhurst, on Sunday, April 2 (1pm onwards).
