Talented pupils in speaking festival

YOUNG performers were in fine voice when they took to the Oldham Coliseum stage for the 33rd consecutive Oldham Choral Speaking Festival.
Around 2,500 pupils from primary schools across the borough performed a series of poems over three days this week.
Schools chose a wide variety of subjects and authors, including Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou, The Dentist and The Crocodile by Roald Dahl, and Don't Bring Camels in the Classroom by Ken Nesbitt.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Oldham Metro, the event was opened by the mayor of Oldham councillor Derek Heffernan with Ann Warr as adjudicator.
Its aim is to foster the enjoyment of poetry in children and to help develop their confidence and public speaking skills by being a member of a group performance.
A special celebration event will be held next month for all the choirs who won trophies or received special commendations during the event to spend a morning showing off their choral speaking skills.
